We may recommend an ultrasound for your pet when we need a visualization of your pet’s internal organs in real time or when we recommend a needle biopsy of any soft-tissue or fluid sample.
Ultrasound is safe and painless, and produces pictures of the inside of the body using sound waves, not radiation. We use of a small probe (transducer) and ultrasound gel (or alcohol) placed directly on your pet’s (shaved or plucked) skin. The high-frequency sound waves are transmitted from the probe through the gel into the body then back to a computer, creating a real time image on the computer screen. Our veteriarians use these real time images to evaluate the structure and movement of your pet’s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through their blood vessels.
